A common feature in new designs, sheet metal is frequently used to form a mounting chassis within an injection moulded case.

With the advent of Rapid Prototyping it is now not uncommon to be able to source the prototype mouldings faster than the sheet metal work, primarily due to the lack of dedicated prototype sheet metal suppliers.

As the technology required is very similar whether it is production or prototype, the prototypes are usual run through a production shop, with the inevitable delays.
